Tom Reidemail: Tom Reid

Tom Reid was born and raised on Salt Spring Island, and began carving in 1974 after becoming intrigued with the many varieties and colour of stone at the annual B.C.Gem show.
He started carving in soapstone, using wood-working tools, and now also carves alabaster, marble. jade , etc. using chisels , diamond wheels and various power tools. His distinctive carvings mostly reflect birds, fish, and wild animals. He was a participant in an intensive Jade carving symposium led by Frederick A.Day, Master Carver, from New Zealand, and has attended several stone scupture seminars with the Northwest Stone Sculpture's Association.
He has given many classes to members of his club, and day courses to various student groups. He has demonstrated carving techniques at the B.C.Gem Show for the past 14 years . His interest in this art form encouraged him to retire early , and since then he has displayed, and sold his work at the Coquitlam Library, Place des Arts, Arnold Mikelson, Mind & Matter Gallery, Blackberry Gallery, Art in the Park and many club shows.
