Myrta Hayesemail: Myrta Hayes

I was born and raised high up in the Swiss Alps and moved to Canada from Switzerland in 1970 with my Canadian husband. While raising two daughters I went back to school, first to improve my English and secondly to get a degree in Science from SFU. In 1997, while teaching biology labs, I decided to develop web applications for anatomy and physiology students (with the help of two colleagues) for which we received an award. Additionally, I always dabbled in clay as one of my major hobbies and in 2003 I decided to retire early to devote more of my time to my two important hobbies: clay-art/pottery and web graphics/design.

Working with clay has given me many delightful hours of activities. I have tried many different techniques to create vessels as is evident by the images on this page. My preferred work is with pure white, high fire porcelain using very subtle colour decorations which gives a watercolour-like effect. I also create functional vessels using an electric kiln and have tried various other firing methods for non-functional items, such as Raku and Sawdust smoking. In addition to working on the wheel I also do some hand-building.
